MX Expertise Value: IA Inspector
In the world of aviation maintenance, safety and precision are paramount. Inspection Authorization (IA) inspectors work to ensure these standards are met. Jason Schlieman, Global MX’s own IA, leads the charge on the maintenance floor each day to certify the quality of work from the crew and airworthiness of craft before return to service.
The IA Inspector’s Role
An IA inspector plays a critical role in aviation maintenance. Schlieman’s primary function is to inspect the work performed by other mechanics on the floor and sign off on maintenance tasks.
“In a Part 145, it’s best to have 100% buy back. That means you get two sets of eyes on everything,” Schlieman explained. Every task must be double checked to ensure accuracy and compliance. When ready, the inspector must sign off on all tasks, guaranteeing they meet the stringent regulations set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Schlieman’s responsibilities extend beyond mere inspection. He is also tasked with signing return-to-service statements and ensuring compliance with the Repair Station Manual (RSM/QSM). Depending on workload, Schlieman often performs maintenance tasks as well, including mechanics, avionics, and sheet metal work.
Training for IA
The journey to becoming an IA inspector requires extensive training and experience. Schlieman’s path began with his service in the Navy, where he spent nearly nine years as an avionics electronics technician. “I did over eight years in the Navy as an avionics electronics technician,” Schlieman said.
After leaving the Navy, Schlieman earned his A&P certificate. To become an IA, Schlieman had to be a mechanic for a while and receive a buy-off from the FAA. “I went and took a course for the IA, and it prepares you for testing,” he explained. The test covered inspection of records, rules governing 145 and part 91 facilities, and required both schooling and real-world experience. “It’s everything you should know…all the rules with what governs your 145 or Part 91,” he added.
According to Nicole Jeffords, Global MX VP Maintenance, the IA position plays a critical role in the operations of the Part 145 repair facility. “We take QA one step further than most and require our IA to have an inspection authorization certificate. That amounts to an extra layer of safety, quality, and experience that we offer above other repair stations. For our customers, that means we go above and beyond the required minimums to ensure that maintenance is completed safely, to the utmost quality standards, and with on-time return-to-service.”
On the Floor: Day-to-Day as an IA
Schlieman’s day-to-day responsibilities as an IA inspector are multifaceted and demanding. Daily tasks may include maintenance work like removing engine cowls, working on engines, and assisting with more complicated tasks thanks to his extensive experience. Balancing MX projects with inspection duties requires a high level of skill and organization.
As an inspector, Schlieman reviews tasks escalated in the maintenance books, witnesses torques, and inspects floor panels before they are closed. The process ensures that all work is double-checked for accuracy and safety. Schlieman carefully balances his roles as both mechanic and inspector, ensuring that all tasks are completed accurately and safely.
The Schlieman Specialty
Schlieman’s background lies in avionics. However, he prides himself on being well-rounded, with experience in various areas including sheet metal and composites. Schlieman attended multiple schools for different skills, allowing him to be versatile and adaptable in the field. This versatility is crucial in the ever-evolving world of aviation maintenance, where staying relevant requires continuous learning and adaptation. ” I used to play baseball when I was young. Something my father always stuck with me. If I only learned to play catcher then it’s less likely that I’m going to play all the time. But if I could play all the nine positions, I’m guaranteed to be in,” he recalled.
People Set the Tone
For Schlieman, the best part of his job is working with experienced and knowledgeable colleagues. “The people here are really good. I’ve learned a vast amount about Gulfstream aircraft in the past year, thanks to my colleagues,” he said. Continual learning and development make the job of an IA mechanic rewarding. “If you keep it that way, then it’s fun to come to work,” he added.

Schlieman emphasized that GMX’s attention to detail and dedication to safety make the company stand out in the aviation industry. The entire team is dedicated to ensuring that all maintenance tasks are thoroughly checked and verified, providing a high level of assurance to their customers. “Others put their lives in our hands, and there’s a lot of checks and balances that get the job done,” he emphasized.
